We look after those who look after you
A cancer diagnosis affects not just the person diagnosed, but also their carers – partners, family, friends, and neighbours providing vital practical and emotional support. Caring can be rewarding but also stressful, and it’s normal to feel anxious, tired, or overwhelmed. Looking after yourself is just as important as caring for your loved one.
At COUCH Cancer Hub NQ, we provide support for carers through practical advice, emotional guidance, and connection with others who understand your experience. We encourage carers to access all the services available at the hub—supporting you is an essential part of supporting your loved one.
Tips for carers to maintain wellbeing:
-
- Schedule regular breaks, socialise, and make time for activities that bring joy or calm.
- Look after your own health – eat well, exercise, get fresh air, and keep vaccinations up-to-date.
- Stay connected – join local carers groups or online forums to share experiences and receive support.
- Communicate openly about your feelings and don’t hesitate to ask for help.
- Monitor your stress and seek professional help from your GP or healthcare team if caring responsibilities affect your mental or physical health.
You don’t have to do this alone – reach out to COUCH and let us help you care for those you love.
